National Cross Country

There could scarcely have been a bigger contrast. The national championships of 2010 took place in an absolute quagmire on the edge of Alton Towers with just a few members making the trip. This year, a glorious day in North London saw the Hampstead Heath course in the driest condition for many years as record numbers turned up in the February sunshine.

First up on the day were our U15 boys who once again had five lads in the field. Being the national championships, most of the top runners in each age group try to make the trip to these events and on there were 366 boys taking part. Our team put in another strong performance to finish as the 33rd team on the day as they were led home by Jordan Clay in 120th. The battle of the day took place between Lloyd Milliken and Tom Boozer as they challenged each other all the way around their 18 minutes of running, with the two of them being awarded the same time, but Lloyd just sneaking ahead in 243rd. Less than twenty seconds behind Tom & Lloyd was Charlie Mead in 268th with Joe McGarry a few seconds further back in 287th. read more

Lanzarote – Club La Santa

Lanzarote Trip - International Challenge Week 

The Club has for every year since 1990 been taking groups of both athletes and non-athletes to Club La Santa in November for the week of “The Challenge” 

Club La Santa is a world renowned sports resort catering for every sport you can imagine, and in the week that we go it is aimed particularly at runners. These runners (or indeed non-runners) enjoy the week enormously for the competition, the social life, the pre-Christmas sunshine and the fabulous atmosphere generated by the guests over the week. 

“The Challenge” was first run in 1989 and some Club members have been to every one since 1990. Our largest party has been 36 with some 17 of us completing “The Challenge”. 

It is certainly not restricted to Club Members, for many years we have been joined by runners from Bearbrook Joggers, Milton Keynes AC, Ampthill and Flitwick Flyers, North Herts Runners and David Lloyd Redway Runners, and indeed friends unconnected with running and basically anyone is welcome to join us for what we think is a great holiday. 

We travel to Lanzarote on a Thursday and the races start with a 10K on Sunday, the “Ridge Run” on Monday (14K), a beach race on Tuesday (5K) and a half marathon (21K) on the last day (Wednesday).  

If you do not wish to run and just enjoy a leisurely lifestyle that is equally fine, or you can borrow bikes, swim in the Olympic size pool, play any number of racquet sports or hone your Pilates, Yoga or Spinning skills, the list is endless. There is a well equipped gymnasium, a new “Wellness Centre” as well as excellent restaurants and bars. All sporting facilities are free with no hidden costs unless you play golf or go diving.  

Prices vary depending on your accomodation choice and can be very reasonable if willing to share in a group. The cost can be increased with rooms with views and having only two in an apartment. Food can be cooked in your rooms and bought from the on-site supermarket or as we mostly do, you can go to one of the many restaurants nearby and enjoy a meal at reasonable prices.

Wing Chiltern League

What a stunning day. The weather was crisp and beautiful. We had a tremendous turn-out from everyone assiciated with the club and correspondingly the results were excellent too.

Firstly, it has to be remembered that there are 14 clubs in division one of the Chiltern League and we are the smallest by some distance. Last year, as a club we finished 9th in the league and this was our best result ever, having picked up a place in the last fixture at Wing in 2011. This year, barring a big upset we were settled in 9th place going into the final day which may not seem like much, but three years ago we were seventh in division 2! read more

Mackers Takes Control

On a literally freezing cold evening in Leighton, the fifth Stag trophy race of the season took place last Wednesday. With the very cold weather and a slight breeze in the faces of the runners down Grovebury Road, it seemed that the chances of fast times were pretty slim.

There were seventeen club members who made it out of the door and down to Parson's Close for the race. As usual, the race unfolded with various people overtaking each other, but it was the youth who were moving through the most. Nearing the end of the last lap, Jordan Clay caught Charlie Mead and they battled to the finish with Jordan taking victory and the 25 points in a new personal best time of 14.50 for the 2.5 mile course. Southern Champs

There are a few iconic cross-country events in England. At Alton Towers last year there was more mud than most people will see in a lifetime, the start of the races at Parliament Hills is a fantastic sight and the national in general is just great to say you've done it. However, the Southern Champs is another dimemsion for those who want to get the full cross-country experience. It is always the longest race on the calender, with the men covering 15K and the women over 8K. read more
