Silverstone 10K

Wednesday night saw the annual running of the Silverstone 10K hosetd by Silson Joggers. This is the first race of the East Midlands Grand Prix Series that spread from Milton Keynes to Market Harborough with 5 mile, 6 mile and 10K races over the next eight mid-weeks and conclude with Milton Keynes 10K on Tuesday 5th July.

The Silverstone race is a unique opportunity to complete two laps of the grand prix circuit on what can be a very fast course. If it is a reasonably still day the fast, slight downhill start gets everyone going at a good pace straight away and teh combination of a very smooth surface and gentle corners gives runners every opportunity for a good time. On a windy day, the exposed nature of the site means that it can be very difficult. read more

Watford 10K

By Amelia Wallace

Back on my old turf on May day, I ran my favourite race of the year, the Watford 10k.  The route goes through Cassiobury park (where the cross-countries are run), country lanes and the beautiful bluebells of Whippendell Woods. The race is not the flattest, however knowing the route off by heart I was unusually comfortable when running up the hills! I always try to be optimistic on the times I will be able to do, however I have found this race to be tricky to achieve a PB due to the narrowness of some of the paths which everyone tries to squeeze through.  This year however, that was not my problem……I found it quite tough to run against the strong wind and the blazing heat/sunshine.  Thankfully the majority of the route was sheltered from the sun which I really appreciated as the hot midday sun did start to drain me toward the end of my race. So, sadly no PB this time however I would definitely recommend this race to anyone who has not tried it before. read more

No Snow Today!

With not a snowflake or patch of ice to be seen for many hundreds of miles (at least outside the odd freezer!) the "Boxing Day" handicap was able to be run in glorious weather on Monday. Nineteen fine athletes turned up at Leighton Town Football club for the final race of the club championship season to challenge for the prestigious Langmay Trophy.

There were seventeen club members plus Glyn Raymen of the Fun Runners and Pat Neilan's son-in-law Simon. It has been a very long time since we had seventeen from LBAC on Boxing Day so there was talk of moving the date permanently, although it does say in big letters on the trophy "LBAC Christmas Handicap"! read more

London Marathon

The six LBAC runners who had entries in to the London Marathon all successfully negotiated the london transport network to make it down to Excel to register for the race which took place last Sunday. All 35,000 runners are expected to go down to the exhibition to collect their numbers and chips (electronic not potato) during the four days prior. All six were in pretty good spirits, although Simon Lathwell had been suffering with a bad cold a few days prior.

The day of the race saw everyone wake up to a clear warm day in London with a forecast that indicated a nice temperature at the start gradually getting warmer through the day. Pete, Craig and Amy all met up at the blue start, while Joe, Ian and Simon were all on red in Greenwich Park. As the race started the sun also began creeping through the clouds, but a great start by all the club members saw them through 10K looking really positive and all on course for their target times. read more

Balmy Brighton & Rotterdam

Last Sunday saw a selection of LBAC members trekking off to compete in a couple of different marathons on a very warm weekend. There were due to be four running down in Brighton, while one intrepid member went to darkest Holland for a run around Rotterdam.

A few days before the weekend, one of the bugs that is going around at the moment put pay to Ian Hosley's chances of a run in Brighton as he was confined to his sofa with the shivers. Having completed all the training, it must be extremely frustrating to then have the chance to take part removed at the last minute, so many condolences to Ian. read more
