All For A Tattoo

Ironman Copenhagen 2017

All for a Tattoo

Ironman Copenhagen was my first (and last I hasten to add) Ironman.

10+ years ago when I joined the club I heard about Ironman from Joe Hurley and Tom May, the only two at the time that ‘did them.’

I remember vividly thinking ‘Really? – you swim for two and a half miles, cycle 112 and then run a WHOLE marathon? Why would anyone want to do that? What on earth is the point? And even if it IS physically possible it can’t be good for you, surely?’ read more

Bearbrook 10k – Club Champs Race

Bearbrook 10k

Sunday 6th August was the date of the Bearbrook 10k, which this year was the LBAC Club Championship race for that distance.

Over the years there have been all sorts of weather with a particularly memorable time a few years ago when Hurricane Bertha came to visit.

This year however, the conditions were much calmer and pretty good for a run up a hill and down again although it was getting a little warm out there towards the end.

There was a big turn out of 21 members from the club racing, but the victorious two were Andy Inchley who is edging ever close to a sub 35 minute 10k again with a time of 35:07 and Vice Captain Jo Sharples, who finished in 43:19 before then running the 14miles back to Leighton Buzzard as part of her marathon training! Andy also picked up second place in the v40 category. read more

Chiltern Challenge – 50km of Fun

Chiltern Challenge

by Alex Killick

Many people have said to me that they couldn’t do it and early last year I would have agreed with them. I mean I could hardly run 5K at the beginning of 2016 let alone 50K. Mr K did his first 50K towards the end of last year and that got me thinking. I like the idea of smaller more relaxed events and so when I found out about the Chiltern Challenge I thought maybe I would give it a go, then it appeared on the list for the club off-road series and I knew I had to do it!

So training wise I had no plan – I just started running more, going out for hours and getting lost, stressing about everything and anything and taking too many photo stops. read more

A Couple of Mugs – Waddesdon 5k

Waddesdon Manor 5k

by Jo Sharples

Organised by Vale of Aylesbury AC, the Waddeson Manor 5K is a mid-week, non-chip timed evening race around the grounds of this national trust site. The race director also organises the Aylesbury Boxing Day 5K, and sports one of the most spectacular moustaches in the area.

I ran this event last year when unfortunately the course got changed last minute and ended up being a 1.5M up hill and 1.5M downhill. It got renamed a ‘hill race’ and everyone got a Waddesdon Manor beer as an apology. This year they had reverted to the original course and I thought great, this can’t be as hilly… wrong. read more

Club Records, PBs and Debuts Galore

EAL Fixture 3 – Cambridge

by David Killick

Before the detail some simple stats:

4 club records broken, 8 debuts in a club top and roughly 25 PBs broken.

Keeping this brief will be difficult so anyone not mentioned many apologies now but I have been asked to limit my ramblings. (Not by me! Ed.)

At U11s we started the day with 6 athletes, ended up with 8 (6 girls and 2 boys) as 2 juniors there decided it looked fun and wanted to do it. Unfortunately this got me into trouble with the league for having too many athletes in events… I did my grovelling and have taken the penalty we have from the league committee (more on that later) and no, I am not sorry for encouraging children to participate in sport when athletics is in decline at a younger level (it was my admin error on not checking the rules as I got carried away with the excitement!)  What a great job they did and had a wonderful time and the 3 girls who did the 4x100m relay for the U13 girls did so with a massive smile, which is what it is all about! read more
