Beginners Tackle Tough Parkrun

by Kate Johnson

Our Tuesday sessions for beginner & improver runners are proving popular, so we decided it was time to test their progress!

We took a trip to Rushmere parkrun, which for those of your who have done this course, it’s a tough one! It’s both undulating and on trails and the weather had left it in a decidely soggy state, so was a real test for our newbies.

5 of our runners met the challenge: Lucie, Susan, Kathleen, Modupe and our newest runner April, who has only been running for 2 weeks. read more

MK Festival of Running

From 5k to 20miles, we had at least one runner in every distance, all with different targets and goals in mind. Here is an insight into the day through the minds of Dominic, Stuart, Lynn and Mark.

5k

by Dominic Grimshaw

On Sunday morning I had to wake up really early and I couldn’t watch videos on my phone or TV.  The reason was we had to go to Milton Keynes as there was the MK Festival of Running.  My mum was running the half marathon so she put my name down for the 5k and I thought it was a good idea. read more

MK Parkrun – 5k Club Championships

On Saturday 18 July, Leighton Buzzard Athletic Club held their annual 5k Club Championship race. This year it was decided that we would take advantage of one of the excellent local Parkruns (www.parkrun.org.uk) to host the race and so it was hoped quite a few members of the club would come to Willen Lake in Milton Keynes to take part.

And what a turn out it was! With 34 club members taking part, some as young as 10 and others 50 or 60 years their senior, it really does show that running can be for everyone. read more

BMAF 5K Nationals

By Gail Duckworth

While the younger members of the Club were competing in the East Anglian League in Luton I was the opposite end of the country in Horwich near Bolton.

The 5K Road National Championship has taken place here for several years mainly because it is incorporated in a weekend of various events including triathlon and cycling and running. The small town closes it roads while the events take place and having a traffic free location is always a bonus. Also, it enables the BMAF to have a Masters only race rather than being incorporated into an event. read more

Venturing into Oxfordshire

Last year James Bell decided to head over to the tiny village of Cottisford on the Oxon/Bucks border for a Tuesday evening 5K. This is an event that used to be called the Charndon 5K and was part of a series called the Fox 4. However, the series has long since stopped and apart from the occasional visit by Gail we hadn’t done the race in any numbers for a long time.

However, with James returning from the event in 2014 with a well-earned PB, he nagged on facebook for a few people to join him this year. Six members answered the call, and although Chris Norman was struck down, there were still five others out to keep James company. read more
