Club Championship Road Race

Having got back into the swing of things a bit recently with 3 Stag Trophy Races and the Round Leighton Buzzard Relay in the last 3 months, we were finally able to get back to racing Club Championship races, with the first in the road champs this year taking place at Blisworth for the 5 mile distance.

As is often the case at Blisworth the evening turned out to be one perfect for running with an otherwise overcast day turning into some welcome evening sun with very little wind. After several off-road training runs with Tuesday’s B&I group I decided to look for a race that would have at least some off-road element.  On Sunday I ran the Stopsley Trail Race, a 5 mile trail with a 10 mile option too. I was joined by James and Sara Lowe, both also B&I runners.  The race is organised by Stopsley Striders, starting and finishing at the Inspire Sports Centre (and what a stunning facility that is!).

The race starts in the leisure centre grounds with a loop that then takes you out onto a country lane.  Just after a mile the route turns onto a farm track running along the edge of wheat fields. read more

Personal bests in purple vests were in abundance during the Clubs 5 mile road race championships around Willen Lake. Held on a perfect morning for running, comments all-around of where’s the wind and out on the course expecting to turn and be hit by a headwind but nothing to write home about for once! The conditions and a fast flat course made for great running and a good days work by the 15 club members out on the day.

Not quite in the class of the Burgin siblings from Bedford and County that took the honors in their respective gender race. But a fantastic 3rd place, and the first female purple and goldd vest and personal best by Jo Sharples (30.56). Do we still give 2nd and 3rd club places? if so then (watch less) Laura Brine and Ruth Mitchell (PB) took those places in the championship. read more

The John O’Callaghan comes a-calling

This year saw LBAC using the John O’Callaghan Memorial 5 mile as the club championship race, having used the Blisworth 5 the last few years. Club races always attract those serious about the overall club championship standings (*ahem* Tom Inchley) and Sunday was no different, with there being a decent sea of purple and gold on the start line.

Starting just outside the grounds of the Luton Hoo at Venue 360, the course was 2 laps and headed straight out and back, looped a playing field and then repeated. This meant 2 things: firstly you did have a 2 way stream of runners for the majority of the course which I found helped with motivation, however, once you had done one lap you had to face it all again and for what should have been a fairly quick and inoffensive course, I found it challenging. I think this was partly because of the monotony of the 2 laps and partly because it was a lot more undulating that I had expected. read more

Suffering from Rounders

It might have been a Friday night, but before we could indulge in the usual frolics whether that’s beers, vino, takeaways or a posh meal out we had some business to attend too! This year’s 5 mile club championship took place in the pleasant Northamptonshire village of Blisworth. Fifteen Buzzards decided to end the week with this race. I’m not sure how I would describe a 5 miler, longer than a parkrun although shorter than a 10k, either way it’s fast and it hurts. This was to be my 3rd race at Blisworth, last year with LBAC and 14 years ago when I took part alongside my sister who at the time was a Wootton Road runner. read more
