Luton 10K

On Sunday 20 July, 9 LBAC runners made the relatively short trek to the Luton 10k, which this year doubled as the county 10k championships and also the club 10k champs.

 

It was an overcast but very muggy morning, with the mercury loitering around the 20-degree mark. Various barbecues and weddings the previous evening provided plenty of material for the usual pre-race excuses, but once 11am approached the excuses were replaced with game faces.

 

The race took place at Luton Hoo (Luton I said), with the Venue 360 complex acting as race HQ. The facilities there are fantastic, with nice changing rooms, showers and, most importantly, a brand new bar on the top floor for post race bevvies. read more

Shearing some time off a Guinness World Record

Me: “Richard, how was your run today?”

Richard: “Yeah it was good thanks, good to be back running here after the floods. I’ve got lots of events coming up, I’m volunteering at the Commonwealth Games and I’m going to try to break another world record and raise some more money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.”

Me: Break another world record?

Richard: “Yeah, a couple of years ago in the Great North Run I broke the world record for the fastest half marathon in an animal costume. But a couple of people broke it after that, I think the record now is about 1 hour 30 minutes. You could probably break the current record, I’ve still got my sheep outfit if you want to have a go. Just find a half marathon, log onto the Guinness World Records website and register your attempt. read more

PB’s Galore in MK

It was a lovely evening for running in Milton Keynes last night, as nine LBAC members went over to the Open University for the final race of the East Midlands Grand Prix Series which was the MK 10K.

It's a pretty flat course in general, with one steady hill just after 8K and only a few fairly sharp turns to possibly slow you down, so with a warm evening and lots of confidence after a weekend of relaying across Bedfordshire hopes were high for fast times.

There were three of our ladies in the race and they took slightly different approaches to it. Kate Johnson went off at around 7:30 pace for the first mile, which was maybe slightly ambitious, but showed that her speed work from the previous evening had inspired her. Although she then did slow somewhat, a fast last mile around the OU site enabled her to come home in 53:23 and record a new PB. read more

Millbrook MAD 5K

Tuesday 24th June saw the return of the annual Millbrook MAD 5k challenge, a 5k race around the roads and tracks of the Millbrook proving ground.Every year various engineering companies bring along their latest vehicles and gadgets to Millbrook to showcase to customers and try to out-do each other!And as part of the fun and festivities, the nice folks at Millbrook set up the most gruelling course they can think of then invite us idiots from the various engineering firms to come and have a race around it all in the name of fun and charity! read more

Man vs Horse

So when two blokes in the Nueadd Arms, in Llantrwyd Wells, challenged each other to race – one on a horse and one on foot over the welsh countryside, over about 22 miles, they had clearly had too much of the mountain air or too much beer…….or maybe both.

35 years ago there were two (three if you count the horse), this year there were over 600 hundred runners including relay runners, and over 60 horses (a record), surely not all of us could have been under the influence? Readers, you can make up your own minds as you go along. read more
