Winslow 10K

While most members of Leighton Buzzard AC were battling the effects of a heavy night in Nottingham (I mean the Nationals), myself, Glen Turner and Adam Haylock were battling a 25 mile-per-hour breeze in my home town run – the Winslow 10k in North Bucks.

Having been born and bred in Winslow, and never having run the local 10k since it began back in 2009, I decided this was the year. The race is organised by the Winslow Lions Club and is one of the their biggest fundraising events. The other big event is the Winslow Beer Festival, which I have been a consistent competitor in for many years! read more

CCCL Finale

Another season in division one of the Chiltern Cross Country League has drawn to a close with plenty of highlights across the board. However, for the geeks amongst us, here are a few stats to sum up the season;

  • 213 runs were completed by 73 LBAC runners at an average of 2.9 per runner
  • We averaged 42.6 at each fixture with the highest attendance at Watford (52) and lowest at Slough (36)
  • 29 people ran at least four races which gets them in the overall results
  • 18 people did all five races which is just a great effort
  • Highest position was 3rd place by Dominic Grimshaw in fixture 5
  • 327 pieces of flapjack were consumed
  • 13 pairs of spikes were put straight in the bin
  • 36,243 photos were taken
  • The phrase "Why are we doing this?" was heard 34 times (inc. 7 with expletives inserted)
  • 837 beers, 234 glasses of wine, 27 ciders 3 half shandies and 1 Cinzano and lemonade were drunk in post race celebrations

In regard to the final fixture, before we get onto the running there should be a number of acknowledgements. Organising any fixture takes a lot of work, the last one is extra challenging and being let down by the host venue a month before is a nightmare! As it was though, we (and the CCCL) are extremely lucky to be able to call on Dickie Inchley to get it all sorted so thank you very much Richard. read more

This is Getting Silly

Tom Inchley's whinging about the Stag reached an all-time high last season when he came second in one of the races; "I've been doing this b****y race for nearly 20 years and I still never won one!".

His mood would not have been improved last night as Katie Haylock romped to her third victory of the season in only her third ever race! Over the course of those three races she has gone from 20:02 to 18:43 and now 17:53 which is an improvement that is just about impossible to match. Yesterday, she crossed the finish line just as Liz Miller and Andy Inchley were entering the park in a battle for second place. the question now is whether Katie can continue on anything like this trajectory? read more

A Debutants Perspective

By Adam & Katie Haylock

This was the perfect January Saturday with bright sunshine, 11 degrees and very little wind to take on the rugged Parliament Hill terrain. The journey went well, parking was fine, what could go wrong? As we were walking towards the start we bumped into Charlie and Jordan who had already run, only to inform us that they were so muddy they had to be hosed down outside before being allowed in the showers! Next was a glimpse of the start line, a massively wide start line narrowing into a muddy steep hill. We gathered at the top of the hill and started to kit up – spikes out, LBAC “uniform” on, beginning to focus on the challenge ahead. read more

January Stag

Why is it that when I don't make the Stag it is packed full of PB's? In October there were 7 and in the late January version there were 8!

The only person out of the first 9 finishers who didn't get a PB was Richard, who may be a little beyond the days of all-time PB's! First home on this occasion was Katie Haylock who has now run two Stags and won two Stags. She clearly has a good opportunity win the overall title but cannot afford to miss any more, with just three left.

Following Katie over the line was Charlie Mead who got a huge PB by around 40 seconds and is now on the hunt for the family record I am sure. Despite still suffering with broken ribs, Mark Haynes finished 3rd, just three seconds ahead on Jane Sauer who beat her PB from March 2011 with 17.10. Alex Britt took 5th place in 15.40 by just sneaking past Richard. read more
