Tokyo Marathon Thoughts

Tokyo Marathon

by Kas Gardner

The 2018 Tokyo Marathon is my fifth World Marathon Major in my quest to get World Marathon Majors Six-Star Finishers Medal. I wasn’t meant to run it this year, but peer-pressure got the better of me and I entered. And then I was the only one of our bunch of four who got in, which meant my husband, Kev, was issued an ultimatum: I’m going to Tokyo, are you coming with me or not?

Anyway, five months further on and we’re in Tokyo, and rather than write a review of the Tokyo Marathon (which is great by the way: really well organised with awesome volunteers) I thought I would regale you with my thoughts as I ran, or as best as I remember them… read more

Winter Half (Take 2)

Winter Half

by Coralie Anderson

It was the morning of the MK Winter Half and I won’t lie, it didn’t fill me with much enthusiasm!  Like many other runners, I felt quite frustrated the event had been postponed in December (but understandably due to the adverse weather conditions). The back end of last year I had been running really well and on track for a PB.  However since the winter months had kicked in I’d really been struggling to get motivated. To be perfectly honest I’d fallen out of love with running and what I use to enjoy had become chore!  I knew today was going to be tough as I’d barely run over the last few weeks. read more

Chiltern Cross Country League – Fixture 5 – Campbell Park

Another Chiltern Cross Country League season comes to an end and once again we are pleased to maintain our position in Division 1. As mentioned at the recent AGM, it wasn’t many years ago that we would never have dreamed of even reaching Division 1 so we must give ourselves a pat on the back for staying up there with the big boys.

Part of the reason for this is how the club has grown and we are now no longer reliant on one particular age group to pull us through. The ladies team in particular has strengthened so much that we can still put a good team out despite missing a number of key runners. read more

The Victoria Park 10k

Victoria Park 10k

by James Cusack

I have wanted to run a sub-40 10k for a long time.

The challenge is my running style.  Those who are kind call it “mesmerising” (Matthew Brooks), those who are honest call it “wonky” (Sam Dear), and those who are my friends from Scotland call it “running like a drunk giraffe”.  Basically, I am 6 foot 4 inches tall and I have poor control of my gangly, bandy limbs!

Despite this, since running 41:13 at the Bearbrook 10k last year, I’ve been gradually improving. Manchester Marathon is on the horizon for me, so I’ve stepped up the training to about 50 miles/week, whilst trying to balance a newborn baby and work (big thank you to my wife Jenny for tolerating this nonsense).  As part of my marathon plan (and because all of sudden a sub-40 10k looked possible) I signed up to the Victoria Park 10k in London. read more

Diary of an injured Runner

7:00 AM – Alarm goes off. It’s early for a non-run day… my ankle is a bit stiff

7:15AM – Up for breakfast and the daily physiotherapy exercises. 1..2..3..4..5..6..7..8…. repeat. Again. It’s boring. It hurts. It has to be done. Same again tomorrow.

8:15AM – My lift arrives. It’s driven by a runner. I grumpily get in as the sleet starts to fall

8:45AM – We’ve arrived in St Albans a mere 30 minutes later. I’m feeling quite warm by now but thirsty for water having discussed physios and injuries with Mrs Norman and Coombes in the pub the night before read more
