Charndon 5K

Last Tuesday, young Gail had something of a blast from the past as she went over to Charndon near Bicester for their annual 5K race, hosted by Alchester RC. Back in the mists of time, when we were all vaguely young there was a series of races in that area called teh Fox Four and they became something of an annual event. The series has long gone, but a couple of the races still remain and Charndon is one.

The course is pretty fast and flat, as is shown by the host of club records that come from the race, including the senior men's best of 15.39. On this occasion Gail ran around the course in 19.02 and therefore set a new record herself, whilst finishing as 3rd lady overall. read more

East Anglian League

Last Sunday saw the first of this year's East Anglian league fixtures take place at Cambridge. Eighteen young athletes from the club made their way over to the event, which is the first of four throughout the season. They give everyone an opportunity to compete, not only in their usual events, but also there are plenty of points available by simply having a go at anything.

Becky Davies, Kirsty-Anya Shefferd and Jess Amey made up the U15 girls team who managed to cover eight events between them. In a series of close events the best performances were Becky's 3rd in the 100m and 2nd in the long jump, while Jess was also 2nd in the B string long jump and Kirsty 2nd in the B string javelin. In the senior ladies events, Natalie Kimble took part in all three throws and picked up 11 points for the club having finished 4th in both the shot and discus. read more

Stevington 12K

It is a very rare day when we can speak of an athlete from LBAC winning an open road race, with the last being 8-10 years ago. However, last weekend Simon Coombes made his short annual pilgrimage to the the Stevington 12K which takes place on the same course as the Oakley 20 North of Bedford. He's been close on a couple fo occasions before, but his time of 42.10 was enough to give him victory by a minute and a half on this occasion. So congratulations to Simon and now, the real question is whether he'll be able to defend his title next year after 12 months of sleepless nights! read more

Bedford 6

Two long standing LBAC members made the trip over to Bedford this week for the third race in the East Midlands Grand Prix Series at Priory Marina. The route is flat and on a still day is also pretty fast as it goes around the lakes on some nice leisure paths.

Richard Inchley has long advocated the series as some good fun, high quality races that take place throughout May and June and he had a reasonable run to come home as 8th V60 in 48.20. The significant appearance of the day however came from our very own Dave Adams! Dave has struggled for the last few years with a succession of injuries but has been training regularly over the last couple of months and completed his first race for a few years in a time of 55.37 for the out-loop-back course. Keep your eyes peeled for further sitings of our elusive handicapper in his running shorts! read more

Gail’s Birthday Celebration

When you get slightly “more experienced” in years you start looking for five year age brackets as it becomes a distinct advantage to being at the bottom end of that bracket when entering races. Our resident international, Gail has just done her first race as a V55 at the BMAF (British Masters Athletic Federation) Relays in Sutton Park, Birmingham, having kept her birthday very quiet!

Unfortunately LBAC doesn’t have a team of three V55’s to compete with Gail in these events, but nevertheless it is an excellent event and so Gail went off to do the first leg and have a good race. As it turned out, her time of 18.32 for the three mile loop was 90 seconds quicker than anyone else in her category and so she walked off with the Gold, fastest lap medal. Well done Gail. read more
