Wardown Park 5K
Well, some things are just like buses. You don't have a race victiry for years and then two come along in one season! It would seem that fatherhood is doing Simon Coombes no harm at all as he took his second road race victory of the summer in the county 5K championships at Wardown Park in Luton. His time of 16:37 put him over 30 seconds in front of his nearest challenger and lead home a good qaulity showing by LBAC.
Behind him, Ben Corfield was someway off his best form, but looking to improve over the summer months and clocked 17:46 to finish 8th and Joby Hobbs took the 3 club place in 18:56. Fred Watt, Tim Bacon and John Adam also competed in the men's event with Fred finishing as 2nd V60 in Bedfordshire.
We also had three representatives in the ladies part of the race with Jane (or Janet) Sauer recording a new PB of 23:11 to come home first with Fiona's 25:25 giving her second place ahead of Liz Miller who took the county V65 award with a completion time of 26:42. Well done to all who took part and may the success continue into the winter races as there is now a lull in club championship events until the cross-country season and the half marathon in September.
One thing we do need to work on as a club is entering county championships! We have recently missed out on a few awards at events because runners didn't enter the county championships. At all of the county races (the next is the Bedford half marathon) there is always a desk set-up where you need to fill out a form confirming that you qualify by either birth or residence in Bedfordshire, otherwise you will not be included in the results, which are completely seperate to the race results. Even if you are not likely to win an individual award, you may well contribute to the team so please make sure you enter and nag the others too. Thank you, plea over!!
