Leighton 10K 2014
By Dan Webb
This may come as a surprise to you, it certainly was for me, but apparently there is another running club in Leighton Buzzard. Leighton Fun Runners (who knew). Anyway they seem like a decent bunch and happened to be organising a 10k race this Sunday. Nine runners from LBAC elected to grace them with our presence, and what a glorious morning for a run it was, with blue skies and not a cloud in the sky, not too hot and not much wind. The course itself is was less forgiving as it was fairly hilly throughout with the infamous Shenley Hill at 8k.
Those of you who read the Leighton Buzzard Observer last week will have noticed Glen Turner made the back page after his win in the Winslow 10k. Well he did it again, first home in 35.11. Next for the club was Pete Mackrell, who came in 3rd in 36.04. Most would think this was fairly impressive on its own, but Pete was actually doing the race as part of his marathon training and had already run the course once, and straight after finishing did it again to make up 20 miles, which meant he missed the presentation and the lovely cake that the Fun runners provided so all the runners could put back on the calories that they had just burned up.
Gary Stratford finished an impressive 6th in 37.29, Chris Norman closely followed in 8th and 38.05, and even closer to Chris was Charlie Mead in 9th and 39.01, the day after he ran in the inter-counties in Birmingham. Warren Rose was pleased with 16th place and 41.39, Daniel Webb got a PB with 44.20 finishing 34th. Lynn Boddy continued her fine form finishing in 48 mins and 51st over the line but 4th woman. Mark Haynes got a massive PB with 49.41 and 57th of all 126 runners.
All in all a great day for LBAC with 5 in the top 10, a 4th placed woman and 2 PBs.
Thanks to all our friends at the Fun Runners for organising such an enjoyable event.
