Juniors – July 2013 Newsletter
Key Points
Summer Break – We will not be training over the summer school holiday period last training 25th July – Start back 27th August. On our return we will be preparing for East Anglian League (EAL) Track and Field to be held at Bury St. Edmunds on the 1st September.
New Members, inductions days. The next induction day is the September 3rd and 5th at Vandyke. Please invite your friends to come along to see if they would like to join in.
Water. Do remember that in this heat, drinking small amounts of water regularly is a good idea. Isotonic drinks are useful, particularly if you are sweating a lot during a workout. If you want to make your own here are a few ‘recipes’ http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/health_and_fitness/4289704.stm
We shall be looking for helpers to marshal the water stations for our club event the Leighton 10. The event will be held on Sunday 22 September, at 9:00am from Vandyke School – Juniors and parents, please make yourself available.
The Final Youth Development League for U17/U20 will be held on 28th July at Sandy.
Results From Recent Competitions
Bedfordshire Network QuadKids Biggleswade (Sunday 14th July)
Aimed at U11s, this was the last in the series of three Quadkids events for the year. Two girls and one boys team competed and there were some great results. Some superb throwing by Scott and Kelsey and notable distance running in the 600m by Dominic and Zara were recorded. These were all top performances in these events. The good news is that in the girls 600m, LBAC has some real depth because Sadie, Jessica and Millie were only a few seconds behind Zara’s lead. Maximum points were recorded by LBAC boys as they all passed the threshold of 2.82m for the standing long jump. Sadie jumped a huge 3.63m for the girls and just pipped Zara at 3.40m to win the event for the girls. The youngest of the girls, Kacie Anderson, should be given a mention for a determined effort of 1.85m – well done.
Lastly, Danielle squeaked under 12.5 secs and Amy just missed 13.5 secs by one 10th of a second in the 75m. Dominic and Zara posted sub 12 sec sprints but Dominic needed three 10ths of a second more to equal Keenan Dyer-Dixon who came first in the event for Biggleswade AC in 11 secs flat. A consistent pattern in the Quadkids for the last year is that we never have enough boys. Next year, if you are U11 please consider this friendly format as Quadkids is a great introduction to track and field.
East Anglian League (EAL) Cambridge (Sunday 14th July)
All ages had an opportunity to compete at Cambridge Track and Field on the 14th July. LBAC sent 24 athletes to compete in most age groups, but we could have accommodated many more. The weather could be described as ideal for short distance and field events, but perhaps a little too hot for those distance runners. It was good to see so many Quadkids coming from Biggleswade to compete: Max Rose had another crack at the 600m and was remarkably only 3 seconds slower on his second attempt of the day. Similarly, Amy Killick and Kacie Anderson, who was further down the field, were both only 1 and 4 seconds behind their earlier 600m times respectively. Shea Minty for the U13 boys showed his class coming first in the 800m in a time of 2:22.50 which is a few milliseconds off an AAA grade one standard meaning that this performance is close to the top 7.5% in the country. U13 girls showed some depth in the field events: Danielle Taylor, Elspeth Ely and Mckenna Keefe put in notable performances for javelin, long jump and shot-put respectively. One to watch, Kelsey Taylor, was only 33cm away from winning the U13 girls shot put and narrowly missed grade 4 AAA standard for that throw by 1cm.
Similarly, Bee Mundy was also able to come second in both the U15 girls shot-put and javelin too, both performances reaching grade 3-4 AAA standards – well done Bee. Cerys Minty and Lilley Coleman, both representing the club for the first time, delivered storming efforts in the girls U13/U15 hurdles. Four boys competed for the club in the U15, and whilst all did well in the heat, the eye catching performance was from Harry Gillions who was more than a metre ahead of the field to win the triple jump in 9.79m. U17 girls and U20 women were thin on the ground generally, having to be merged with the women’s events in which our very own coach Fiona Towell had a fair crack at the throwing events. Fellow coach, Warren Rose did the business in the men’s event.
The U17 boys saw a good performance from Jordan Clay in the 1500m in a time of 4:24.62 which gets Jordan a grade 4 AAA standard and a PB. One non-LBAC result is of note and shows what specialist athletes can do when they put their mind to it: Albert Pavelin (U17) from Cambridge & Colchester threw a huge 53.78m for the javelin, which is above grade 1 standard for the category. Well done to all that competed and sorry that we cannot mention everyone.
If you’d like to compare your results with AAA standards then a guide to those times and distances can be found here: http://www.englandathletics.org/page.asp?section=1600§ionTitle=AAA+Standards+Scheme. Well done to all and particularly to those that produced their best and got themselves a PB, whether or not they made the AAA standard – we can’t ask more than that.
LBAC Family Day, Stantonbury Track, MK (6th July).
Just a quick note to say that much fun was had competing and sometimes beating the adults on the fun day. We’d like to thank Nick, Warrren, Fiona and Jon for organising this.
East Anglian League (EAL) Officials
Those of you that have the bug for officiating(or just want to wave a flag!) and wonder how the time keeping or field and track officials know what they are doing, there are courses that we can register you on that will help you and the club fulfil its commitment. Not only useful for EAL but the club family’s day and Quadkids events. Also, any practice competitions we put on at training will put these skills to good use. Please let Nick know and he will source a course for you.
LBAC Kit Ordering:
Club kit can now be ordered directly from the supplier and sent to your home. If children are racing in league matches they need to race in a club vest and we encourage club members to buy their own. Ordering is quite straightforward: click www.leightonbuzzardac.co.uk . If you have any remaining questions please contact me on 01525 211195 or michelle@plummer1.demon.co.uk
Parent Help:
Please continue to help when you can and ask Fi, Warren, Jon or myself for any tips if you are thinking about becoming a coach. (This will help reduce the waiting list of potential athletes that we have waiting to join).
Coaching Assistants:
Thank you to: Lynn Boddy, David Killick, Kim Taylor, Tracey Hawes who have offered to undertake their Coach assistants course to help with training on Tue and Thu. The next course is will be in November and details can be found here: http://www.englandathletics.org/courses.asp?itemid=11715&itemTitle=Coaching+Assistant§ion=33
Lastly, we would like to say farewell and thank you to Dave McGarry who leaves at the end of the month.
The parent help list is getting shorter, thank you
But, if you are not cut out for coaching and fancy helping with the club admin the below tasks are still vacant:
· Co-ordinate entries for the summer track and field events. (This could be broken down into Girls and Boys team managers)
· Summer events coach (transport) coordinator (only two coaches to book a year generally depending on fixtues) coordinate who is traveling by coach and collect monies on the day.
· Membership secretary – (this task is nearly complete for this year, just new members and those still to join this year to take on)
· Quad Kids event reports (A parent of an under 11 year old would be suitable for this task)
. Sportshall event reports
. Sportshall Coordinator (Winter 2013)
. Quadkids Coordinator (Summer 2014) (a volunteer from those who will still have under 11’s next year ie year 6 and below at school)
Training and support/shadowing the current holder of these tasks will be given for all positions. Please talk to Nick to discuss the task you would like to take on.
