Leighton Fun Runners – Couch to 5k
January sees the start of the Leighton Fun Runners’ beginners’ sessions on Monday evenings that will be running for 9 weeks.
It gives novice runners a chance to start a structured training system based on the “Couch-2-5k” programme pioneered in the USA and recommended by the NHS Live Well Initiative.
The weekly sessions will begin on Monday 14th January 2013. Starting from outside the Cricket Club, Bell Close at 7.30pm, and the sessions will mix walking and running, designed as a safe and manageable start for your fitness routine. The course costs £10 and this will be donated to SERV, the charity that supplies volunteer motorbike riders to transport blood and organs around the country.
Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you’ve never run before, or if you want to get back into being more active, Couch to 5K is a cheap and easy way of getting fitter and more healthy.
There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For starters, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight; especially if combined with a healthy diet.
Perhaps the unexpected side-effects are the mental benefits of running. Taking on the challenge of Couch to 5K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal.
The Couch to 5k is a great way to make new friends in a well established club with 100+ members. We have runners of all standards and no matter what your ability you will find great support and encouragement. We also have a full calendar of events including social outings, group runs and races.
This is fourth time that the Leighton Fun Runners have run the programme and its success has encouraged novice runners to go on through the club to complete half marathons and even full marathons!
You can find the programme we’ll be using at www.nhs.uk/livewell/c25k website and you can even download podcasts to help you through your training sessions.
