Ridgeway Run
Having entered the Ridgeway run hosted by Tring a few months ago, Jane sacrificed her number in September after her operation. As it is a rare year when the race and the first Chiltern League are not on the same weekend Amy took it upon herself to get a bit reckless and nab Jane's number.
As is his wont, Andy then felt obliged to join his wife on the start line in race he hasn't done in six years. The run is 9.7 miles, of which about 6 are off-road up and down the hills of the Ridgeway around Tring, Pitstone and Ivinghoe. It is extremely popular with over 600 entries and 550 participants on the day.
As with most of the country, the early mist and fog did not linger long and the chilly start to the day turned into a beautiful autumn morning as Andy and Amy lined up with friends from MKAC on the start line. After the previous day's parkrun, neither were really up for pushing the pace early on so after a slightly chaotic start they settled in to a steady pace.
After the first mile on the road the route heads up hilll to the Ashridge monument, which is the most challenging of numerous climbs on run. Over this period Andy moved from 12th after the first mile into the top five. The leader and reigning champion was well clear but the next 6-8 were still close together and jostling for position overtaking each other.
Amy meanwhile spent most of the race chatting to various people about the lovely scenery that the routes takes in and really only decided to start working through the field in the last couple of miles as she upped the pace and starting moving through to finish in 1:21:20 and the top half of the field.
Having moved into 4th at the four mile point Andy was battling with a runner from Handy Cross for a top three place and as they left the top of the ridge around six miles for the biggest downhill on the route Andy got a lead through a gate and managed his fastest mile to secure the spot right to the end.
