Readybrek or Werthers

Three LBAC members took on the hills of the Watford on Sunday morning. With the weather set at a comfortable ten degrees, but with a bit of a breeze to work against it was reasonable conditions to take on the tough course.

Club captain Tom May feasted on a whole Werthers Original for breakfast, but it didn't stop him heading off for a fast start down the slope in Cassiobury Park which he knows well from Chiltern Leagues down the years. Having decided to go for a steady start and pick up the pace, Amy Inchley covered the first mile in 7.30, about a minute quicker than planned! Amelia Wallace was running on home turf, having been brought up in Watford and was therefore much more sensible over a route she knows only too well.

After that quick first mile, both Tom and Amy settled in to a more sensible pace and Tom held his position whilst the two girls worked through the field over the course of the race. The event is extremely well organised and this year had just a touch under 2000 finishers, so you are never without company during the 13.1 miles. At about ten, Tom said he felt that his "breakfast" had warn off and he lost a touch of speed, but still crossed the line in 1:25:43 and 99th place. Whilst this is still some way off his best, it's just good to see Tom out racing regularly after numerous years of injury.

With a fairly heavy training schedule and a tough course on a windy day, Andy has suggested to Amy that just getting round comfortably in a moderate time was probably the way to go. As ever, Amy completely ignored him and worked through the field throughout the race – even managing a smile at mile 8! – to gain yet another PB. She beat her Bedford time by 3 minutes to complete the course in 1:32:34. Maybe Readybrek is the better breakfast option? Having had consistent issues with her IT band, and trying to enjoy being shouted at by her father, Amelia Wallace was pleased to complete the course comfortably in 1:58:42.
