Trophies Flow at the County Championships
LBAC secured a whole host of awards at the County Cross-country Championships in Luton this weekend. The championships, which were postponed in January due to the snow making the course inaccessible, suffered somewhat with attendance but LBAC's commitment to the event proved very worthwhile.
The first award came in the U13 boys where Jordan Clay managed too pip Joe McGarry for the first time this season as they led the team home to 3rd place with Jake Irvine and Lloyd Milliken helping them score the vital points. In the U13 girls Beth Tipitte ran well but the results are yet to be posted on the website, so the details will be updated next weekend.
The next trophy winners were the senior ladies where Gail Duckworth won a medal in every age group up to V50 and Jill Richardson, who was feeling a little "under the weather" at the start took away a bronze medal in the V40 category. The two of them with the valuable support of Amy Inchley managed to snatch the team winners trophy for only the second time in the club's history. The ladies were closely followed by Fred Watt who cruised around the 4K course to take victory in the men's V60 category, much to his own amusement as only a couple of weeks ago he ran well around the 15K of Parliament Hills!
Finally the senior men unfortunately lost out due to geography issues. The club's leading two runners on the day were Simon Coombes and Andy Inchley. Simon has represented Herne Hill Harriers for many years as a first claim member and at the moment this is still the case so was unable to count for the team, whilst Andy Inchley lives in MK and so has to run in the Buckinghamshire championships. Simon had a cracking run and is the first club member to win the prestigous senior trophy that has names on it back to 1925.
Andy actually led home a pack of Leighton athles who rushed in behind him, with Nick Clay, Pete Foulkes, Tom May and Joby Hobbs all crossing the line within a few minutes over the 7.5 mile course and the five of them plus Simon would have walked away with the team trophy without the issues mentioned earlier. As it was, only Nick Clay ended up with a gong, by taking second place in the V40 category.
